OUTREACH
The Outreach branch of CURB is focused on the connection between Cornell undergraduates and the Ithaca community. We have two main programs that reach out to different target audiences:
Current Chairs: Sabine Paz-Le Draoulec (sep245@cornell.edu) and Sophia Roache (sbr92@cornell.edu)
Sciencenter Showtimes
Showtimes take place at the Ithaca Sciencenter where we prepare small experiments and activities for children that visit the Sciencenter. Cornell undergraduates are encouraged to participate in this event by presenting educational experiments to children along with an informative presentation on relevant scientific principles. Students that have joined and presented at Sciencenter have practiced and further developed their public speaking skills and have benefited from learning how to talk about complicated science in a comprehensible manner for a younger audience.
Latest Showtime: Building the clocktower out of spaghetti!
This showtime involved demonstrations that showed young kids how to implement structural designs to build a standing structure. Children played around with stability of different geometric shapes, and competed to build the tallest structure out of spaghetti and marshmallows.
In Your Own Backyard
In Your Own Backyard takes place on Ithaca main campus where we bring Cornell research relevant to the community in an accessible presentation. Cornell undergraduates can get involved by attending the event and potentially present at the event if they are working in a research lab with research relevant to the Ithaca (Northeastern United States) community. Previous events have featured research about the microbiome of the soil and a fish tracking project. Future events will feature animal science, climate change, and astronomy research.
Past year’s (2021) IYOB event was held online via Zoom webinar. During this event, Cornell graduate students presented their research on the environment and sustainability. We recorded the event and posted it on our YouTube channel. If you missed it, check out our YouTube or watch below!
