The Outreach branch of CURB is focused on the connection between Cornell undergraduates and the Ithaca community. We have two main programs that reach out to different target audiences:
Sciencenter Showtimes take place at the Ithaca Sciecenter where we prepare small experiments and activities for children that visit the Sciencenter. Cornell undergraduates are encouraged to participate in this event by presenting experiments to children along with an informative presentation on relevant scientific principles. Students that have joined and presented at our Sciencenter have practiced and further developed their public speaking skills and have benefited from learning how to talk about complicated science in a comprehensible manner for a younger audience.
Latest Showtime: What's the Weather Today?
This showtime involved three demonstrations that showed young kids how the weather occurs. One focused on the visuals of tornados, the second focused on how rain falls, and lastly, the third station showed how water evaporates.
In Your Own Backyard
Into Your Own Backyard takes place at the Tompkins County Public Library where we bring Cornell research relevant to the community in an accessible presentation. Cornell undergraduates can get involved by attending the event and potentially present at the event if they are working in a research lab with research relevant to the Ithaca (Northeastern United States) community. Previous events have featured research about the microbiome of the soil and a fish tracking project. Future events will feature economics, climate change, and policy research.
If there are questions or interest getting involved in our Outreach events, please feel free to reach out to the Outreach Chair, Ananya Jambhale (firstname.lastname@example.org).
